The doubt sowed in my mind, in 2000, by the MMR scare was intensified by the concern about mercury that started in the US around the same time.

Mercury is a silver-coloured liquid at room temperature and one of the most toxic substances known to man. It is often found in old-fashioned glass thermometers, blood pressure machines, as fillings in our teeth and, also, though we may not know it, in vaccines.
The type of mercury in vaccines is contained in Thiomersal, a preservative. About half of this preservative is made of ethylmercury, which is harmful to many ares of the body, particularly the brain, nerves, immune system and kidneys.

Yet formal safety studies have never been done on humans to this date. It is hard to believe that one of the most toxic elements known to man has been injected into babies for over sixty years without anyone ever ensuring that it was safe to do so. In the USA concern about mercury in vaccines has been bigger news than the MMR scare in Britain.

英國將於數周內推出的豬流感（H1N1甲型流感）新疫苗，被發現含有可令腦部受損的水銀及可引致多發性硬化症的鯊烯（Squalene），引起當地專家關注

Government:
There are very large safety factors built into the estimated levels recommended, and the mercury in UK vaccines does not exceed these safety levels.
Fact:
There are no safety levels for the mercury in vaccines and never have been.The dose in a single vaccine exceeds the recommended maximum daily level for food by up to 100 times.Government:
Vaccines with Thiomersal have ethylmercury in them. The mercury that may be toxic in the diet or the environment is methylmercury. Ethyl- and methylmercury are hundled quite differently by the body. Ethylmercury excreted quickly and does not accumulate.
Fact:
It is true that the body excretes about half the ethylmercury in vaccines in a week or so, whereas it takes seven to eight weeks to get rid of half of the methylmercury eaten in fish. But this has no bearing on the maximum blood level of mercury which are likely to cause the harm.
Government:
Ethylmercury that is in Thiomersal is not same as methylmercury, and has not been linked to harm in levels present in vaccines.
Fact:
most experts agree they are similarly toxic. Ethylmercury (in Thiomersal) in vaccines, has been linked to autism and other development disorders in scientific studies and by doctor.

在1999年美國政府指令疫苗生產商必須立即除去疫苗中所含的水銀成份，但直至2006年，含有水銀的疫苗並沒有被回收，現在所謂不含水銀的疫苗其實也有(0.05mcg)微量水銀，這足以對幼童造成永久性傷害。
